Teeth Whitening in Bala Cynwyd, PA

Over time, our teeth can become stained or discolored for various reasons. For example, certain foods and drinks like coffee, tea, and wine can stain your teeth. Smoking is another common cause of tooth discoloration. Certain medications can also discolor your teeth. That said, the most common reason for tooth discoloration is age. As we age, the outer layer of enamel on our teeth wears down, revealing the natural yellow color of our dentin.

Fortunately, teeth whitening can help restore the color of your teeth. Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure that aims to remove stains and discolorations from the surfaces of your teeth.

At The Dental Spa, we offer two types of whitening treatments: in-office and at-home bleaching. Both options use peroxide-based bleaching agents to whiten your teeth. In-office bleaching takes about an hour to complete. First, we place a rubber dam over your teeth to protect them from the bleaching agent. Next, we apply the bleaching agent to your teeth and use a special light to activate the solution. After about thirty minutes, we remove the bleach and rinse your mouth.

The second type of whitening treatment is at-home bleaching. For at-home bleaching, we first take impressions of your teeth to create custom trays that fit snugly around your teeth. We then give you the resulting set of trays and bleaching gel to use at home.

Common Causes of Tooth Discoloration

Age

As we age, the enamel on our teeth naturally thins, revealing the yellowish dentin beneath, which can gradually darken the teeth.

Lifestyle Habits

Habits such as smoking or using tobacco products and consuming dark-colored beverages like coffee, tea, red wine, and cola can cause significant staining on the teeth over time.

Poor Oral Hygiene

Inadequate oral hygiene practices can lead to the buildup of plaque and tartar on the teeth, contributing to surface stains and discoloration.

Certain Foods

Some foods, like berries, tomato sauce, soy sauce, and curries contain pigments that can stain the teeth.

Trauma

Injury or trauma to a tooth can cause it to become discolored over time.

Medications

Certain medications, such as tetracycline antibiotics, can cause intrinsic stains on the teeth, which are more challenging to remove.
